JOB TITLE:

News Anchor/Reporter - Mountain West News Bureau Reporter

JOB PURPOSE:

Report for Wyoming Public Media and for the Mountain West News Bureau.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research, gather, write, and produce network quality spot news for multi-platforms including on-air and digital for WPM and Mountain West Bureau.
  • Anchor network news for WPM. Edit scripts, call for updated information as needed. Record news reports for digital platforms.
  • Produce national network level feature stories for on-air and digital mediums, including video and photos. Create sound rich material with strong emphasis on storyline. Provide deep research into topics.
  • Participate in special coverage including breaking news, election coverage, documentaries. Anchor fund drive as assigned.
  • Work with WPM and Mountain West Bureau Managing Editors to identify local and national placement of content. Pitch to NPR, NNN, Marketplace, among other distributors.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide assistance in station management and assist in news coverage and live or taped events.
  • Provide coverage for air shifts in the absence of other broadcast personnel.

This position provides content for both Wyoming Public Media and the Mountain West News Bureau, a regional LJC covering issues in American West, including energy, Indigenous populations, water rights, health, education, commerce, natural resources/wildlife, the tourist economy, among others. The position is based at Wyoming Public Media and works with both the WPM News Director and the Mountain West Bureau Regional Editor. Its an exciting opportunity to cover Wyoming and the real American West.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

Ideally, this position requires the successful candidate be available to work in Wyoming and preferably in the WPM studios in Knight Hall on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Journalism or related field.

Experience: None

Required licensure, certification, registration, or other requirements:

Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) that is compliant with the .

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of and a commitment to the mission of public media journalism.
  • Strong knowledge of Wyoming, its issues, cultures, and people.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced deadline-driven media environment.
  • Proven skill in newsroom operations, including news writing, assigning, editing, fact-checking, hosting, announcing.
  • Excellent news judgment and ability to make and effectively articulate thoughts and decisions verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects and prioritize tasks.
  • Proven ability to engage with diverse teams of reporters and producers working in radio, digital platforms, and social media.
  • Experience in working with station management and in implementing directions.
  • Successful experience working with NPR and regional editors.
  • Knowledge of new media applications, ability to learn quickly, solve, and apply solutions.

Experience: Three years' experience in a broadcast position in radio and multi-media platforms.

ABOUT THIS POSITION:

Wyoming Public Media is seeking a public radio reporter to join our newsroom as the network reporter assigned to the Mountain West News Bureau. The MWNB is a collaboration of five public radio stations in various Rocky Mountain states covering regional issues affecting the American West, including topics such as wildlife, land use, the environment, health, growth, education, indigenous cultures and affairs. and politics. MWNB is funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and WPM listeners.

This position provides content for both Wyoming Public Media and the Mountain West News Bureau. The position is based at Wyoming Public Media and works with both the WPM News Director and the Mountain West Bureau Regional Editor. ABOUT WYOMING PUBLIC MEDIA:

Wyoming Public Media is an award-winning statewide public media network operating four radio channels and one digital service. It broadcasts local programming as well as NPR national and BBC global productions. Formats include talk, news, music, culture, entertainment. The network's main studio is in Knight Hall, on the UW campus. The WPM news department employs 9 full-time journalists in addition to part-time employees and interns.
