Job Description:

This position is responsible for ensuring that all surgical supplies, instruments and equipment are properly inventoried, decontaminated, assembled, inspected, packaged, sterilized, stored, distributed and tracked in a quality / timely manner throughout the hospital. Will train to perform these duties independently and without close supervision.

You.

Scope

1.Operates and monitors sterilization equipment.
2. Prioritizes daily tasked based on interpretation of surgical schedule, determining the requirement for instruments for each surgical case.
3. Disassembles carts and follows Universal Precautions for decontamination.
4. Sterilizes, disinfects durable medical equipment and instruments, packages clean supplies and instruments, maintains records for all instruments and transports sterilized items to the floor.
5. Assembles sterilized instruments and rechecks all instruments for cleanliness and/or impairment. Properly checks power equipment.
6. Takes measures to allow for easy instrument tracking including following labeling processes, use of engraver, reporting and documenting all missing instruments and implants replaced in trays.
7. Communicates the equipment and instrument inventory status with the Central Processing staff and Surgery Charge Nurse including order status, back orders and/or changes.
8. Responds to emergency situations by insuring all emergency, trauma and add-on cases are supplied properly and delivered to the Operating Room in a timely manner.
9. Utilizes applications and technology to accurately facilitate record keeping in accordance with State and Federal regulations.
10. Provides on the job training on the job training (OJT) to newly hired associates in the department.
11. Promotes mission, vision, and values of SCL Health, and abides by service behavior standards.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.
13. May be required to work overtime based on business need.
14. May be required to float to other departments (within scope of competency and qualifications) based on business need.
15. May be required to be placed on-call during a regularly scheduled shift.

Minimum Qualifications

Required
High School diploma or equivalent
Certified Registered Central Supply Technician (CRCST) or Certified Sterile ProcessingDepartment Technician (CSPDT), or Certified Surgical Technician (CST)
Competent working knowledge in all aspects of Sterile Processing

Preferred

1+ year of experience in a hospital or clinic operating room

Demonstrated competency in all areas of Sterile Processing tasks, procedures, practices.
Regular attendance to perform work on site during regularly scheduled business hours or scheduled shifts is required.
Advanced knowledge of cleaning, disinfection and decontamination processes and sterilizers.
Advanced understanding of types and functions of instruments and equipment (e.g. endoscopic, microsurgical, robotic and power)
Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically within a multi-functional team.
Experience and understanding in the use of computers, as well as the ability to learn software relevant to Sterile Processing.
Ability to successfully function in a fast-paced, service oriented environment.
Ability to work nights and/or weekends.

Physical Requirements:

Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.- and -Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.- and -Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.- and -Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.- and -Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).- and -May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.

$16.00 - $27.42
